Swift Creek Baptist Church

Warm Hearted Church with a Heart Warming Message

Ninety-eight Christians met in the Colonial Heights Optimist Club Building on January 29, 1978 to discuss the formation of a new church.  Tommy Davidson was called to be the pastor of the new church.  In February of that year services began in the Colonial Heights Community Center.  Soon, this new fellowship of believers moved to the cafeteria of the North Elementary School.  On March 26, 1978 one hundred twenty-one people constituted the Swift Creek Baptist Church.  Thirty people were added to the church by baptism the first year.  The church became a member of the Petersburg Baptist Association (SBC) in October of 1978.  Soon, the church bought property on Branders Bridge Road for the construction of a permanent church home.  There was a ground breaking ceremony for the new building on Nov. 19, 1979.  On March 23, 1980 the new building was dedicated unto the Lord.

Some of the highlights of our history since those early days include the following: To make provision for future growth, the church acquired 1.4 acres of additional land in Nov., 1983.  Rev. Norman Harris became the church's 2nd pastor in November of 1984.  Following his resignation, the church called Rev. Steve Felker as pastor in 1987.  Since then, the church has grown from 275 members to over 550.

With new growth the church took steps toward another building program.  On Nov. 15, 1989 the church paid off the bond debt early on the old building.  Then, in November of 1990 over $200,000 was pledged or given for the construction of a new building.  On July 22, 1991 construction began.  On March 29, 1992 we dedicated our new building to the Lord.  In December of 1992, we completed remodeling our old auditorium into Sunday School space.

Other highlights of our recent history include the following: We started Children's Church for ages 5-8 in September of '95.  On March 31, '96 we set an all time high attendance in Sunday School with 326 present.  In March of '97 we established a Home Page on the Internet: www.swiftcreekbaptistchurch.  In May of '97 we expanded our Staff to include Ron Kidd as full-time Associate Pastor/Youth Director.  We purchased our first 15 passenger van in February of '99, and began a second Sunday morning worship service in April of '99. We celebrated paying off the debt on the new building with a Note Burning Service in Sept. of 2000. In Sept. '03 we began the AWANA program for children. In July '04 we purchased more land for future expansion. In 2005 we called Brent McGuirt to serve as our new Youth Minister. In September of 2007, we broke ground for a new building. In the last 29 years the church has grown from 121 members to over 640.
